UPDATE: ALL THE NOMS AND WINS SCORED. – And a Film Look’s LIST for 2013 Movies.
With the Golden Globes behind and the Oscar nominations in, the contending movies have settled into a pattern that will lead us inexorably to the March 1st fete. In the race to the Oscars 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle are undoubtedly the ones to beat. The combination of previous wins and multiple nominations make it clear that they are the strongest contenders.  Big upsets could still be dished out by Nebraska and Gravity but, with the latter, Cate Blanchett’s lock on the win seems to have crashed Sandra Bullock’s chances, bringing down the film with her.

Early promises by Inside Llewyn Davis and Saving Mr. Banks have fizzled out, while Her seems to be losing momentum.  Captain Phillips, with lots of nominations but scant wins in award season so far seems to be missing the boat. Late contenders Saving Mr. Banks and The Wolf of Wall Street perhaps were handicapped on account of their late comer status but The Wolf has quickly gained ground and could be a big story.

In the Indie World, (aside from 12 Years…) Nebraska holds on while Dallas Buyers Club gains momentum.  The Independent Spirit Awards will surely be a great one this year with contenders such as the ones mentioned plus All is Lost, Before Midnight and Blue Jasmine in the mix.
