TV and Radio Movie Critics Choice Nominations Make Waves

THE 20th ANNUAL CRITICS’ CHOICE MOVIE AWARDS.

HEADROOMOver 300 nationwide movie critics from television and radio have their say in these awards. That is more votes than in the Golden Globes, but with no big hype.

This is the last of the nominations that weigh the most and are not from actual movie makers, such as actors, writers, etc. We’ve heard from some of those already (Independent Spirit and Screen Actors Guild) but January will bring the rest, including BAFTA – The Brits.

Meanwhile, the buzz on two women as possible Oscar Nominees for Best Director build, as Ava DuVernay (Selma) and Angelina Jolie (Unbroken) get nods from the critics. The ten movies selected for Best Picture by the Critics’ Choice look like an Oscar prediction. We expect that their list will closely match the Oscar nominees foe Best Picture except, perhaps, for one. Or two.

Birdman cements its place as the critics’ darling, with Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel close behind. The Imitation Game ups the ante and Unbroken enters the competition for real, as it only had garnered Best Film listings from AFI and NBR. Nightcrawler watches from the sidelines, ready to make its move. The other outliers are American Sniper, Big Eyes, Inherent Vice, and Wild. Perhaps also Still Alice, yet, no doubt Julianne Moore—unless strange things happen—will take home the Oscar for Best Actress.
