Writers Guild Awards 2013 Winners – The Writers have Written

WGA StatuetteA double coast ceremony for the Writers Guild of America Awards 2013 shines a light for Zero Dark Thirty (Winner – Original Screenplay) and propels Argo further (Winner – Adapted Screenplay).

Unquestionable momentum for Argo keeps building, but the victory by ZD30 could lead this film to further gold.  The claim of “Reported Filmmaking” by Mark Boal now is up for an Oscar against the “Historical Reinterpretation” of  Django Unchained, by Quentin Tarantino (because Tarantino is not a member of the WGA, his script was not eligible for this award).  Final Oscar votes are due in this Tuesday and, while the strong contender here is Tarantino, with this win some gilded dust may brush off for ZD30 in other categories.

Regarding Chris Terrio’s Argo, its historical events may be more cinematographically compelling than those depicted in Tony Kushner’s Lincoln and, at this time, it does seem that the depiction of the politics behind the 13th Amendment have less chances than those behind the probable Oscar win for Argo.

That’s funny that you say that because well, aside from being the obvious if they are already even nominees that, as you’ve pointed out already, ZD30 is a so called new genre of some kind based on reality replayed. Not a bad premise to work with since reality has been trumping fiction lately. So it’s ironic that a film that is, no doubt, many cuts above the ‘run-of-the-mill’ docu-drama, but nonetheless still just a much more polished hearty production version of that, would get best Original screenplay nomination and Argo, which is also based on a real incident, the more obvious Adapted screenplay nomination since it’s based on a book, which was no less based on a real incident.

Whaaaat?
