While the film festival circuit has given us some hints on noms, the studios’ marketing machines are gearing up to create prestige and buzz around their favorite movies – and their favorite people. Some of these studio selections seem odd, perhaps millions of times over, but not every film is pushed for every category. That is yet to be decided. In some cases.

Yet you can bet that the major contenders will come from these lists.

Kind of bummed that The Drop did not make it. Tom Hardy was very good in it, and I liked Noomi Rapace also. Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, Shutter Island) did good here too. There is an outside chance that 20th will include it but it would have fit well in their Searchlight division, which already made its selections. Box Office matters.
